About us

Hope over hopelessness.

Since 2019, Bridge Builders to the New Generation has worked inside schools across East Contra Costa County, helping young people heal, think critically and see a path to college, career and life.

Our vision

Hope overcomes hopelessness

A world where youth can heal and grow as critical thinkers, with exposure that expands their opportunities and breaks down barriers to success.

Our mission

Empower youth and families

We empower youth from urban and marginalized communities through restorative justice practices, social-emotional learning and culturally responsive opportunities, building the resilience and skills to succeed in college, career and life.

Our goal

Students who lead change

We help students from low-income communities take ownership of their education and become catalysts for change. Our long-term goal is a boarding school that gives students a supportive place to reach their full potential.

Dr. Shamawn Wright, founder and CEO of Bridge Builders to the New Generation

Founder and CEO

Dr. Shamawn Wright

“Turning at-risk youth into high-promise youth, so they can graduate high school and attend college.”

Dr. Wright grew up in East Oakland surrounded by drugs, gun violence and poverty. As a Black male former foster youth, he was pushed out of schools that didn’t affirm who he was, and spent time in the Contra Costa County juvenile hall.

He turned it around. He graduated from Antioch High School in 2011 and earned a full football scholarship to UC Davis, finishing a B.S. in Sociology (Organizational Studies) in 2015. He went on to earn an M.A. in Higher Education and Student Affairs from the University of San Francisco in 2021 and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from San Francisco State University in 2024.

In July 2019 he founded Bridge Builders to the New Generation to bridge students from underserved communities in Antioch to higher education, leadership and life skills, and to build a network of family, validation and support for young people from backgrounds like his own.
